USPS Delivery Speed by Region: How Long Packages Take
USPS Delivery Speed by Region: How Long Packages Really Take
How long a USPS package takes depends on the service and on the specific origin and destination ZIP Codes. USPS’s published delivery estimates are:
- Ground Advantage: 2-5 days in the lower 48 states
- Priority Mail: 2-3 days
- Priority Mail Express: 1-3 days, with a money-back guarantee
- Media Mail: 2-8 days
USPS’s own Service Commitments tool shows how those ranges play out. For a package mailed mid-morning on Tuesday, October 20, 2026:
- Priority Mail was due Friday, October 23 between nearly every pair of mainland cities in the sample below.
- Ground Advantage was due the same Friday to nearby regions, Saturday at mid-range distances, and Monday, October 26 coast to coast.
- Alaska and Hawaii take far longer by ground: about two weeks.
This guide explains how USPS sets delivery expectations, what they look like by region, how often USPS actually meets them, and how to check your own route.
Key Takeaways
- Priority Mail is the most consistent by region. In the sample below it was due 2 days after mailing locally and 3 days to almost anywhere in the lower 48.
- Ground Advantage stretches with distance. It ran 2 days locally, 3 days regionally and 5 delivery days cross-country, all within USPS’s 2-5 day estimate.
- Alaska, Hawaii and the territories are different. Ground Advantage from New York to Anchorage was due 15 days after mailing, while Priority Mail was due in 4 days. USPS’s holiday guidance lists a service expectation of 10 days or more for Ground Advantage between the lower 48 and these areas.
- USPS publishes on-time performance by region for mail and Media Mail-type parcels. In April-June 2026, 97.4% of Package Services pieces (Media Mail, Library Mail and Bound Printed Matter) arrived on time nationally, against 88.4% in Alaska and 87.7% in Hawaii.
- Check your exact route with USPS’s Service Commitments tool rather than relying on regional averages.
What USPS Promises, by Service
| Service | USPS delivery estimate | Guaranteed? |
|---|---|---|
| Priority Mail Express | 1-3 days, delivered by 6 p.m. | Yes, money-back guarantee for most domestic addresses |
| Priority Mail | 2-3 days | No |
| USPS Ground Advantage | 2-5 days in the contiguous U.S.; slower to Alaska, Hawaii and offshore areas | No |
| First-Class Mail (letters, flats) | 1-5 days | No |
| Media Mail | 2-8 days | No |
USPS sets expectations ZIP Code to ZIP Code, based on origin, destination, the mailing date and the time you drop off. In 2025 USPS refined its service standards in two phases, on April 1 and July 1. It kept the existing day ranges for First-Class Mail and Ground Advantage, and it offers 2-3 day service within regions and specific local areas. USPS also said changes to regional transportation may add a day for mail collected at certain Post Offices, while improving speed between regions.
Expected Delivery by Region: A Sample From USPS’s Tool
The table shows the expected delivery dates USPS’s Service Commitments tool returned for a package dropped at a Post Office in the origin city on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. These are USPS’s service standards, not guarantees, except for Priority Mail Express.

What the sample shows:
- Same metro area: 2 days for both Ground Advantage and Priority Mail.
- Regional (East to Midwest or South, West Coast to the Mountain states): 3 days for both services.
- Mid-range (East to Mountain, Midwest or Texas to the West Coast): Ground Advantage takes 4 days, including Saturday, while Priority Mail stays at 3.
- Coast to coast: Ground Advantage is due the following Monday, 5 delivery days after mailing. Priority Mail still arrives Friday.
- Direction doesn’t matter much: New York → Los Angeles and Los Angeles → New York had identical expectations.
- Alaska and Hawaii: Priority Mail took 4 days, but Ground Advantage took 13 to 15 days. Priority Mail Express was next day to Anchorage and 2 days to Honolulu.
For mail in the same sample, First-Class Mail letters were due Friday to Monday. Package Services, which includes Media Mail, were due Monday, Oct. 26 or Tuesday, Oct. 27 on mainland routes.
How Often USPS Hits Its Standards, by Region
USPS publishes quarterly on-time results for its mail classes, broken out by area and district. The reports cover First-Class Mail and Package Services but don’t break out Priority Mail or Ground Advantage. The latest results available on October 19, 2026 cover April-June 2026 (fiscal 2026 Q3):
Package Services (Media Mail, Library Mail, Bound Printed Matter), percent on time:
| Area | On time |
|---|---|
| Nation | 97.4% (target 96.5%) |
| Westpac Area | 98.2% |
| Southern Area | 97.8% |
| Atlantic Area | 97.0% |
| Central Area | 96.7% |
| Puerto Rico | 92.5% |
| Alaska | 88.4% |
| Hawaii | 87.7% |
USPS also reported that 99.3% of Package Services pieces arrived within the service standard plus three days.
Single-piece First-Class Mail (letters and postcards), percent on time:
| Area | 2-day standard | 3-to-5-day standard |
|---|---|---|
| Nation | 87.7% | 88.7% |
| Westpac Area | 92.3% | 93.2% |
| Southern Area | 88.0% | 88.0% |
| Atlantic Area | 86.2% | 88.0% |
| Central Area | 85.5% | 87.2% |
Nationally, at least 98.4% of First-Class Mail arrived within the standard plus three days. Both products improved on the same quarter of 2025. In other words, most items arrive on the expected day, but roughly one in eight First-Class letters nationally missed its standard in that quarter. For Package Services, misses were far more common in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico than on the mainland.
What Slows a Package Down
- Distance and the service you choose. Ground Advantage adds days as distance grows. Priority Mail mostly doesn’t within the lower 48.
- Drop-off time. Expected dates depend on the time you mail. Hand the package over before the Post Office’s last dispatch for that day, which the Service Commitments tool shows for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express.
- Noncontiguous destinations. Packages to Alaska, Hawaii and offshore ZIP Codes may get slower service, as do packages containing hazardous materials.
- Postmarks and pickup timing. USPS notes that because of transportation changes, some mail doesn’t reach a processing plant on the day it’s mailed, so the postmark date may be later than the drop-off date. Ask for a manual postmark at the counter if the mailing date matters.
- Peak season and weather. For delivery before Christmas, USPS recommends shipping by December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Check USPS service alerts during storms.
How to Check, or Speed Up, Your Route
- Look up your ZIP pair in USPS’s Service Commitments tool for your mailing date and drop-off time. USPS also offers an interactive service-standards map.
- Upgrade where it matters. In the sample above, Priority Mail saved 2 days over Ground Advantage coast to coast. For a 1 lb package to Zone 8, Priority Mail cost $17.95 at the counter against $13.65 for Ground Advantage in October 2026.
- Use Priority Mail Express when the date is fixed. It was due the next day on every mainland route in the sample, with a money-back guarantee.
- Mail early in the day, before the last dispatch time.
- Ship much earlier to Alaska and Hawaii, or use Priority Mail, which was due in 4 days in the sample.
