Complete USPS Shipping Guide 2026: Every Service Compared
Price note: All prices in this guide are USPS retail (Post Office) prices as of October 2026, taken from the USPS price list (Notice 123) that took effect October 4, 2026. They include two temporary increases that USPS says will remain in place until January 17, 2027. Check the USPS price calculator before you ship.
Complete USPS Shipping Guide 2026: Every Service Compared
For most people, USPS shipping comes down to five domestic services: First-Class Mail for letters and flat envelopes, USPS Ground Advantage for economical packages, Priority Mail for faster packages, Priority Mail Express for guaranteed delivery, and Media Mail for books and other eligible media. A sixth product, Parcel Select, is sold only to commercial shippers who drop their packages at USPS destination facilities.
Prices moved several times in 2026, so this guide works from the current price list instead of January estimates. A Forever stamp costs $0.82, Ground Advantage starts at $8.40 at a Post Office, Priority Mail at $11.50, and Priority Mail Express at $37.05. Below we explain what each service includes, when it is the cheapest choice, and how to pay less than the retail counter price.
Key Takeaways
- Ground Advantage (2-5 days) is the cheapest USPS option for most packages, and it includes up to $100 of insurance and tracking, just like Priority Mail.
- Priority Mail (2-3 days) is the faster mid-price option. Its Flat Rate boxes beat weight-based prices for heavy items going far: the Medium Flat Rate Box ($25.80) is cheaper than weight-based Priority Mail from 3 lb to Zone 8.
- Priority Mail Express (1-3 days) is the only domestic USPS service sold with a money-back delivery guarantee.
- Commercial prices (online labels) were roughly 16% to 44% below retail for Ground Advantage and 1% to 37% below retail for Priority Mail in the October 2026 tables, for packages from 1 to 20 lb.
- Dimensional weight changed on July 12, 2026: packages larger than 1 cubic foot are now priced using a divisor of 139, the same figure UPS and FedEx use.
Every USPS Service at a Glance (as of October 2026)
| Service | Starting retail price | USPS delivery estimate | Max weight | Max size | Tracking | Included insurance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First-Class Mail (letters) | $0.82 (1 oz stamped) | 1-5 days | 3.5 oz | Letter size | No | No |
| First-Class Mail (large envelopes) | $1.69 (1 oz) | 1-5 days | 13 oz | Flat size | No | No |
| USPS Ground Advantage | $8.40 | 2-5 days | 70 lb | 130 in length + girth | Yes | Up to $100 |
| Priority Mail | $11.50 (by weight); $13.90 (Flat Rate Envelope) | 2-3 days | 70 lb | 108 in length + girth | Yes | Up to $100 |
| Priority Mail Express | $37.05 (by weight); $38.25 (Flat Rate Envelope) | 1-3 days, guaranteed | 70 lb | 108 in length + girth | Yes | Up to $100 |
| Media Mail | $4.39 (1 lb) | 2-8 days | 70 lb | 108 in length + girth | Yes | No |
Starting prices are for the lightest weight going to the nearest zone. Delivery estimates are USPS’s own and, except for Priority Mail Express, are not guaranteed. Included insurance applies when the label carries a USPS tracking barcode, and you can buy extra coverage up to $5,000 for Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express.
How USPS Prices Changed in 2026
USPS changed prices four times this year, which is why figures from early-2026 articles are now out of date:
- January 18: Shipping prices rose about 7.8% for Ground Advantage, 6.6% for Priority Mail, 5.1% for Priority Mail Express and 6.0% for Parcel Select. Stamp prices did not change.
- April 26: A “time-limited” 8% increase, which USPS tied to transportation costs, was added to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select. It runs until January 17, 2027.
- July 12: Mailing prices went up. The Forever stamp rose from 78 to 82 cents, postcards from 61 to 65 cents, and one-ounce international letters from $1.70 to $1.75. The same day, USPS moved its dimensional-weight divisor to the industry standard and added hazardous-materials handling fees for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express.
- October 4: The holiday peak-season surcharge started. It adds between $0.50 and $9.10 to retail Priority Mail and Ground Advantage prices, depending on weight and zone. Flat Rate products go up $1.00, or $2.10 for the Large Flat Rate Box, until January 17, 2027.
USPS may change prices again when the temporary increases end in January 2027. For more on the year’s changes, see our 2027 rate increases guide.
First-Class Mail: Letters and Flats
First-Class Mail is for letters and large envelopes that are flat and flexible. It is not a package service. A 1-ounce stamped letter costs $0.82, and each additional ounce adds $0.29, up to $1.69 at the 3.5-ounce limit. Metered letters are $0.04 cheaper. Large envelopes (“flats”) start at $1.69 for 1 ounce and reach $5.24 at the 13-ounce maximum. Domestic postcards cost $0.65.
Square, rigid or lumpy letters pay a $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge. Large envelopes that are rigid, not rectangular, or uneven in thickness are charged package prices. First-Class Mail has no tracking. If you need proof of delivery, add Certified Mail.
USPS Ground Advantage: The Default for Most Packages
Ground Advantage replaced First-Class Package Service, Parcel Select Ground and Retail Ground in July 2023. It carries packages up to 70 lb and 130 inches in combined length and girth. USPS’s delivery estimate is 2-5 days, and it can be slower to Alaska, Hawaii, offshore destinations, or for hazardous materials. Tracking and up to $100 of insurance are included. Ground Advantage is also the main USPS option for hazmat items that can’t travel by air.
Retail Ground Advantage prices as of October 2026:
| Weight | Zone 1 | Zone 4 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 oz | $8.40 | $8.80 | $10.20 |
| 1 lb | $10.05 | $11.10 | $13.65 |
| 5 lb | $13.75 | $16.60 | $27.45 |
| 10 lb | $16.75 | $20.20 | $40.85 |
| 20 lb | $24.00 | $28.55 | $72.15 |
Packages under 1 lb are priced in four steps (4, 8, 12 and 15.999 oz). Anything heavier is rounded up to the next full pound. For packages measuring 108 to 130 inches in length and girth, an “oversized” price applies regardless of weight.
When to use it: for anything that isn’t urgent, and especially for packages under about 2 lb, where Ground Advantage is usually the cheapest USPS option. When to skip it: when you need a firm delivery date, or when a heavy, compact item going cross-country would cost less in a Priority Mail Flat Rate box (see below).
Priority Mail: Faster, With Flat Rate Options
Priority Mail now carries a USPS delivery estimate of 2-3 days, and the Domestic Mail Manual states that the time is not guaranteed. It includes tracking, up to $100 of insurance for most shipments, free USPS boxes and envelopes, and free Package Pickup. Weight-based retail prices as of October 2026:
| Weight | Zone 1 | Zone 4 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $11.50 | $12.40 | $14.05 | $17.95 |
| 5 lb | $15.10 | $18.30 | $24.20 | $39.00 |
| 10 lb | $18.60 | $22.55 | $30.75 | $63.40 |
| 20 lb | $26.80 | $32.35 | $51.25 | $113.70 |
Zones measure the distance between the origin and destination ZIP Codes. Zone 1 is the closest, and Zone 8 is the farthest for most mainland routes.
Priority Mail Flat Rate prices
Flat Rate products cost the same to any domestic address for items up to 70 lb, as long as the item fits in the container with the lid closed normally.
| Flat Rate product | Retail (Post Office) | Commercial (online label) |
|---|---|---|
| Flat Rate Envelope | $13.90 | $11.97 |
| Legal Flat Rate Envelope | $14.25 | $12.51 |
| Padded Flat Rate Envelope | $15.00 | $12.84 |
| Small Flat Rate Box | $14.65 | $12.95 |
| Medium Flat Rate Box | $25.80 | $22.02 |
| Large Flat Rate Box | $36.10 | $32.75 |
When Flat Rate wins: Distance makes the biggest difference. With retail prices as of October 2026, the Medium Flat Rate Box is cheaper than weight-based Priority Mail at these weights:
- Zone 8: 3 lb and up
- Zones 6 and 7: 4 lb and up
- Zone 5: 7 lb and up
- Zone 4: 14 lb and up
Compared with Ground Advantage, the same box wins from 5 lb to Zone 8, 7 lb to Zone 7, 9 lb to Zone 6 and 11 lb to Zone 5. For light items or short distances, weight-based pricing is usually cheaper. Our flat rate vs weight-based comparison works through more examples, and USPS Flat Rate vs Weight-Based: Which Saves More? lists every box size.
Priority Mail Express: The Guaranteed Option
Priority Mail Express is USPS’s fastest domestic service. It is delivered 1-3 days to most U.S. addresses and comes with a money-back guarantee of delivery by 6 p.m. on the promised date, with exceptions listed in the Domestic Mail Manual. Retail prices start at $37.05 for a half-pound package going to Zone 1, and the Flat Rate Envelope costs $38.25. Up to $100 of insurance is included. USPS delivers Priority Mail Express 365 days a year, and guaranteed Sunday or holiday delivery adds $12.50.
Use it for documents or items that must arrive by a specific date. To compare overnight options from other carriers, see our carrier comparison guide and overnight shipping comparison.
Media Mail: Cheapest for Books and Recordings
Media Mail costs $4.39 for 1 lb, $7.34 for 5 lb and $11.02 for 10 lb, and the same price applies to any domestic distance. USPS estimates delivery at 2-8 days. Only eligible content qualifies:
- books of at least eight pages
- sound and video recordings, including CDs and DVDs
- printed music and printed test materials
- manuscripts and playscripts
- printed educational charts
- medical loose-leaf pages and binders
- computer-readable media containing prerecorded information
Video games, computer drives and digital drives do not qualify. Books may not contain advertising other than incidental announcements of other books, which rules out most magazines and catalogs. USPS can open and inspect Media Mail, and if the package holds ineligible items, you or the recipient will owe the higher postage. Media Mail does not include insurance.
For a 5 lb box of books, Media Mail costs $7.34 compared with $13.75 to $27.45 for retail Ground Advantage. Our USPS Media Mail guide covers packing and eligibility in more detail.
Parcel Select: Commercial Only
Parcel Select (Destination Entry) is a commercial product for high-volume shippers who drive their packages to a USPS destination facility, such as a delivery unit or a regional processing center. It is not sold at Post Office counters. Individual shippers and most small sellers will use Ground Advantage instead.
Dimensional Weight and Nonstandard Fees
Since July 12, 2026, if a Ground Advantage, Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express package is larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), USPS calculates a dimensional weight by multiplying length × width × height and dividing by 139. You pay for whichever is greater, the dimensional weight or the actual weight. Fractions of an inch round up. USPS’s own example is a 16 × 12 × 10 inch box weighing 5 lb. Its volume is 1,920 cubic inches, which gives a dimensional weight of 14 lb, so you pay the 14 lb price. Leaving out the dimensions or giving wrong ones can add a $3.00 noncompliance fee.
Long or bulky packages also pay nonstandard fees as of October 2026:
| Nonstandard condition | Ground Advantage | Priority Mail / Priority Mail Express |
|---|---|---|
| Length over 22 in, up to 30 in | $4.50 | $4.50 |
| Length over 30 in | $10.00 | $21.00 |
| Volume over 2 cubic feet | $21.00 | $35.00 |
| Tubes, rolls, cans, wooden or metal boxes, some liquids | $4.50 | $4.50 |
How to Get Commercial Prices
The Post Office counter charges the most. You get lower commercial prices by buying the label online, with no volume minimum. The options are USPS’s own Click-N-Ship, or a PC Postage provider such as Pirate Ship, which advertises no monthly fees or markup, or Stamps.com, whose pricing page listed plans starting at $14.99 a month in October 2026. A few examples from the October 2026 tables:
- Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope: $13.90 retail vs $11.97 commercial
- Ground Advantage, 2 lb to Zone 8: $19.80 retail vs $13.42 commercial
- Priority Mail, 10 lb to Zone 8: $63.40 retail vs $43.03 commercial
How much you save varies with service, weight and zone. For a 1 lb Priority Mail package to Zone 5, the commercial price was only about 2% lower. See Stamps.com vs PirateShip vs ShipStation for a platform comparison.
Cubic pricing
Commercial shippers can also use cubic pricing, which sets the price by package size and zone instead of weight:
- Priority Mail Cubic: packages up to 0.5 cubic foot
- Ground Advantage Cubic: packages up to 1 cubic foot
For both, the package must weigh 20 lb or less, its longest side can’t exceed 22 inches, and tubes and rolls are not eligible. Cubic pricing pays off for small, dense items. For example, a 12 lb item in a 0.3-cubic-foot box going to Zone 8 cost $21.42 with Priority Mail Cubic in October 2026. Commercial weight-based Priority Mail cost $50.10 for the same package, and retail cost $75.60.

| Service | Retail fee | What it does |

| Adult Signature Required | $9.70 | Signature of an adult 21 or older |

Choosing the Right Service: Decision Steps
- What is it? Eligible books or media go Media Mail. Letters and flat envelopes up to 13 oz go First-Class Mail. Everything else is a package.
- Does it need a guaranteed date? If so, use Priority Mail Express.
- How heavy, and how far? Under about 2 lb, Ground Advantage is usually cheapest. Heavier, compact items going to Zone 5 or farther are often cheaper in a Priority Mail Flat Rate box. Compare both in the USPS calculator.
- Is it large but light? Check the dimensional weight before you choose a box. A smaller box can cut the price.
- Is it worth more than $100? Buy additional insurance, or for high-value items consider Registered Mail.
- Over about 20 lb? Compare USPS with UPS and FedEx ground services. UPS and FedEx accept packages up to 150 lb, while USPS stops at 70 lb.
Free USPS Supplies
USPS provides free Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express boxes, envelopes and Flat Rate packaging. You can pick them up at a Post Office or order them from the USPS online store, where USPS says orders usually arrive with your regular mail within 7 to 10 days. Ground Advantage and Media Mail don’t come with free boxes, so use your own packaging.
Holiday 2026 Reminder
For delivery by December 25 within the lower 48 states, USPS recommends mailing by December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail, and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. For delivery times between two specific ZIP Codes, use the USPS Service Commitments tool.
