Best Shipping Service for Overnight Delivery
Price note: Unless noted, prices are 2026 retail prices as of October 2026, from USPS Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026), the FedEx Retail Rates guide (effective January 5, 2026, updated September 11, 2026) and UPS’s 2026 Rate and Service Guide for Retail Rates (effective September 7, 2026). UPS and FedEx can add fuel and other surcharges to these rates. Get a live quote before you ship.
Best Shipping Service for Overnight Delivery
USPS Priority Mail Express had the lowest retail price of the services compared here for most packages in October 2026, but it isn’t a guaranteed next-morning service. USPS promises delivery in 1 to 3 days by 6 p.m., depending on the route, with a money-back guarantee. FedEx and UPS sell true next-business-day services with a choice of delivery times. Early morning means FedEx First Overnight or UPS Next Day Air Early, mid-morning means FedEx Priority Overnight or UPS Next Day Air, and later in the day means FedEx Standard Overnight or UPS Next Day Air Saver.
For a 1 lb package going a medium distance (Zone 5), Priority Mail Express cost $53.85 at retail. The cheapest FedEx or UPS next-day option was UPS Next Day Air Saver at $79.64 before fuel surcharges, and FedEx Priority Overnight was $94.68. On short trips the gap shrinks, and for heavier packages going a short distance the UPS and FedEx base rates were lower than Priority Mail Express.
This guide compares delivery commitments, guarantees, surcharges and prices using each carrier’s own published 2026 terms.
Overnight Service Comparison
| Feature | USPS Priority Mail Express | FedEx Standard Overnight | FedEx Priority Overnight | UPS Next Day Air Saver | UPS Next Day Air |

FedEx’s overnight page says its overnight services deliver Monday to Friday, with Saturday delivery in certain areas for an extra charge. FedEx’s 2026 Service Guide sets that charge at $16 per package. On signatures, FedEx says it typically collects one for business deliveries or when the declared value is above certain thresholds, and that many shipments are released without one. UPS’s 2026 retail guide prices Signature Required at $7.70 and Adult Signature Required at $9.35 per package.
Price Comparison by Weight
These are retail prices for a medium-distance shipment, Zone 5 on each carrier’s chart. UPS numbers its air zones 102-108 for Next Day Air and 132-138 for Next Day Air Saver. On UPS’s zone charts these line up with its Ground Zones 2-8, so Zone 5 means Zones 105 and 135. Each carrier sets zones from its own chart for your origin ZIP Code, so check yours.
| Weight | USPS Priority Mail Express | UPS Next Day Air Saver | FedEx Standard Overnight | UPS Next Day Air | FedEx Priority Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $53.85 | $79.64 | $81.00 | $89.12 | $94.68 |
| 2 lb | $62.20 | $88.13 | $91.38 | $96.61 | $101.66 |
| 5 lb | $91.30 | $116.35 | $120.63 | $119.95 | $128.37 |
| 10 lb | $132.95 | $157.90 | $160.22 | $161.21 | $166.56 |
| 20 lb | $194.55 | $242.62 | $246.37 | $247.08 | $261.82 |
Sources: USPS Notice 123; UPS 2026 Retail Rates; FedEx 2026 Retail Rates. UPS says its rates don’t include its fuel surcharge. FedEx’s Ground retail tables say they include fuel and residential surcharges, but its express tables carry no such note and point to separate surcharge information.
In this example, Priority Mail Express was 16% to 32% cheaper than the lowest-priced FedEx or UPS next-day service, UPS Next Day Air Saver, and 20% to 43% cheaper than FedEx Priority Overnight. The advantage was largest on light packages and smaller at 10 and 20 lb.
Distance changes the picture. Here is a 1 lb package at three distances:
| Service (1 lb) | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Priority Mail Express | $37.75 | $53.85 | $65.15 |
| UPS Next Day Air Saver | $38.17 | $79.64 | $95.05 |
| FedEx Standard Overnight | $40.82 | $81.00 | $99.65 |
| UPS Next Day Air | $41.37 | $89.12 | $102.45 |
| FedEx Priority Overnight | $45.22 | $94.68 | $113.48 |
| UPS Next Day Air Early | $71.37 | $119.12 | $132.45 |
| FedEx First Overnight | $76.22 | $125.68 | $144.48 |
On a short trip the difference nearly disappears. At Zone 2, Priority Mail Express was only 42 cents cheaper than UPS Next Day Air Saver for 1 lb. For heavier packages going a short distance, UPS and FedEx base rates were lower: 20 lb to Zone 2 cost $101.15 by Priority Mail Express, $78.89 by UPS Next Day Air Saver and $85.36 by FedEx Standard Overnight. Fuel surcharges narrow or reverse those gaps. FedEx’s fuel surcharge for domestic express package services was 32% for October 19-25, 2026, and UPS adds a weekly Domestic Air Fuel Surcharge to all of its Next Day Air services.
UPS also publishes Daily Rates for account holders. In its September 2026 guides, Daily Rates were higher than Retail Rates in every example shown here. For example, 1 lb by Next Day Air to Zone 105 was $95.84 at Daily Rates and $89.12 at Retail Rates. Negotiated account discounts are a separate matter.
Cheapest Overnight Option
For medium and long distances, USPS Priority Mail Express is usually the cheapest of these services at retail. USPS doesn’t add fuel or residential surcharges; Notice 123 lists neither. That matters for home deliveries, where FedEx adds a $6.95 residential delivery charge per package and UPS adds $7.00.
The Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope costs $38.25 at retail, or $33.46 at commercial prices when you buy the label online, to any U.S. destination. USPS charges the same price for anything that fits with the flaps closed within their normal folds, up to 70 lb. For long distances that’s far below FedEx and UPS envelope rates: at Zone 8, FedEx Standard Overnight charged $65.63 for an envelope and UPS Next Day Air Saver $63.14 for a letter. For short trips it can be the other way around. At Zone 2, those rates were $35.26 and $33.91 before surcharges.
Before you rely on Priority Mail Express for an overnight delivery, check the date. Its guarantee is 1 to 3 days, and USPS’s Service Commitments tool shows the expected delivery date for your ZIP Codes and whether a money-back guarantee applies.
Earliest Delivery Guarantee
If you need the package to arrive as early as possible the next morning, here’s how the services rank:
- FedEx First Overnight: by 8, 8:30, 9 or 9:30 a.m. in most areas, with some extended areas up to 2 p.m. FedEx’s rate guide says the time is the same for businesses and homes.
- UPS Next Day Air Early: by 8 a.m. to major cities in the 48 contiguous states and by 8:30, 9 or 9:30 a.m. to most other cities, with some extended areas up to 2 p.m.
- FedEx Priority Overnight and UPS Next Day Air: FedEx commits to 10:30 a.m. for most businesses and noon for most homes. UPS commits to 10:30 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. or end of day for businesses, depending on the destination, and noon or end of day for homes. Since October 18, 2021, “until further notice,” UPS has given residential Next Day Air deliveries that used to be due by 10:30 a.m. a noon commitment.
- FedEx Standard Overnight and UPS Next Day Air Saver: FedEx commits to 5 p.m. for businesses and 8 p.m. for homes. UPS says it has extended the Next Day Air Saver guarantee to end of day, 11:59 p.m. on the guaranteed day, until further notice. FedEx sells Standard Overnight only where Priority Overnight is committed by 10:30 a.m. or noon, and UPS sells Next Day Air Saver only where Next Day Air is committed by 10:30 a.m. or noon.
- USPS Priority Mail Express: by 6 p.m., in 1 to 3 days.
Early delivery costs more. At 2026 retail rates, FedEx First Overnight cost $31 more than Priority Overnight for a 1 lb package in each of Zones 2, 5 and 8, and UPS Next Day Air Early cost $30 more than Next Day Air.
Money-Back Guarantees in 2026
All five services in the comparison table had a money-back guarantee in October 2026, but the rules differ, and FedEx and UPS have suspended guarantees before.
- USPS: If a Priority Mail Express shipment misses the guaranteed date or time on your receipt, request a refund within 30 days of the mailing date. Since August 1, 2023, USPS no longer processes service-guarantee refunds for Priority Mail Express to or from Alaska and Hawaii, though it still processes refunds for loss. Under Domestic Mail Manual 113, you can avoid the Sunday and holiday premium by choosing guaranteed delivery on the next regular delivery day.
- FedEx: Under FedEx’s current policy, effective February 12, 2026, the guarantee covers First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight and 2Day A.M. for U.S. payers. It remains suspended for all other FedEx services. FedEx suspended it on its overnight services for packages shipped from December 1, 2025, citing seasonal volume and a temporary cut in fleet capacity, and reinstated it on January 13, 2026. Around holidays, FedEx also sometimes pushes morning commitment times back by 90 minutes, as it did on September 9 and 10, 2026, because of the Labor Day holiday.
- UPS: The UPS Service Guarantee is active for Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air, Next Day Air Saver and 2nd Day Air A.M., and it remains suspended for other UPS services.
When to Choose Each Service
Choose USPS Priority Mail Express when:
- Price matters most and the package is going a medium or long distance.
- You’re shipping to a home. There’s no residential surcharge, while FedEx adds $6.95 and UPS $7.00 per package.
- You need Sunday or holiday delivery. It’s available in many major markets for $12.50 extra.
- The address is a PO Box. USPS delivers Priority Mail Express to most U.S. addresses and PO Boxes.
- A 1-3 day guarantee by 6 p.m. works for you. Check the Service Commitments tool for your route first.
Choose FedEx when:
- You need a set time the next business day, such as 10:30 a.m., or early morning with First Overnight.
- Your package weighs more than 70 lb. FedEx overnight services take packages up to 150 lb.
- You need Saturday delivery with Standard Overnight or Priority Overnight. It’s available in many areas for $16 extra.
- You have a FedEx account with negotiated rates.
Choose UPS when:
- You want the lowest next-business-day base price. UPS Next Day Air Saver was the cheapest FedEx or UPS next-day option in every example above, but it has no Saturday delivery.
- You need early-morning delivery. Next Day Air Early starts at 8 a.m. in major cities.
- Your package weighs more than 70 lb. UPS also takes packages up to 150 lb.
- You have a UPS account with negotiated discounts.
How to Save on Overnight Shipping
- Check whether you really need overnight. USPS Priority Mail arrives in 2-3 days, and a 1 lb package to Zone 5 cost $14.05 at retail, against $53.85 for Priority Mail Express. See our complete USPS shipping guide.
- Buy postage online. Priority Mail Express commercial prices in Notice 123 were 8% to 14% below retail for packages from 0.5 to 20 lb in Zones 1 to 8. See Stamps.com vs PirateShip vs ShipStation.
- Use the Flat Rate Envelope for documents going far. At $38.25 retail or $33.46 online, it costs the same to every zone.
- Get it in before the cutoff. USPS treats a Priority Mail Express item mailed after the Post Office’s acceptance time as mailed on the next day the office is open. FedEx cutoff times vary by location.
- Skip extras you don’t need. Saturday delivery costs $16 with FedEx and $16 for UPS deliveries to homes, and USPS charges $12.50 for Sunday or holiday delivery.
- Count the surcharges. Fuel and residential charges can add a lot to FedEx and UPS base rates, so compare the final price, not the rate table.
- Negotiate if you ship overnight regularly. UPS and FedEx offer account pricing, and regular shippers can ask about negotiated discounts.
Key Takeaways
- Priority Mail Express was the cheapest retail option for medium and long distances in 2026, 16% to 32% below the cheapest FedEx or UPS next-day service at Zone 5. Its guarantee is 1 to 3 days by 6 p.m., not next morning.
- For short trips and heavier packages, UPS and FedEx base rates can be lower, and surcharges decide the final price.
- FedEx First Overnight and UPS Next Day Air Early are the earliest options, at about $30 more than the 10:30 a.m. services.
- UPS now commits to noon, not 10:30 a.m., for residential Next Day Air deliveries, and to end of day for Next Day Air Saver.
- All five compared services carried money-back guarantees in October 2026.
- USPS is the only one of the three that lists Sunday and holiday delivery ($12.50), and it charges no residential surcharge.
- For packages over 70 lb, use FedEx or UPS, which accept up to 150 lb.
